Try installing the most recent Kyma release by using your original download link to get the current installer. There was an issue between later releases of Tahoe and past Kyma versions that cause problems similar to what you have experienced. This has been discussed a few times on the Discord, which is where most of us users hang out now for this sort of information.

This *was* a problem when I first started back on preparations for this upcoming performance (after the last update replaced it with a generic default global map). But I discovered that problem early on and corrected it.

Meanwhile… I have decided to go back to "bare bones” triggers (!KeyNumber eq: 39) for most of the timeline WaitUntil sounds. In most these instances it would be better if the timeline blows through WaitUntil (doesn’t wait) than to get hung up and stall. But in two of the most critical situations where it would be "catastrophic" for the timeline to blow through the WaitUntil until I have arrived at it with my performance, I’m using this: (!KeyDown /\ (!BC gt: 0.1) /\ (!KeyNumber eq: 37)). And I make sure that I have absolutely no air flowing through the EWI and that my fingers off the trigger note keys just before I want the timeline to start moving again. A couple of times, in situations where it’s possible that I might want to arrive at a sustained trigger note a little bit in advance of the WaitUntil, I’ll use the following:

Anyway … today things went pretty well most of the day. I did have a question about how I could get a trigger like (!KeyDown /\ (!KeyNumber eq: 37)) to only trigger 3 times and then never again. I imagine it involves using countTriggers eq: … (something?). I’ll try again tomorrow to figure it out.

The MOTU M2 require a USB 2, USB 3, or USB-C connection, while the Pacarana has USB 1.1 and FireWire connections.

The Pacamara has both USB 2 and USB-C connections and would work with this interface.

Please try a factory reset on the Ultralite:

Press the VOL button momentarily to power up the interface.
Wait for it to go through its power up sequence; at this point it should show Meter on the display.
Press PARAM three times; it should momentarily show SETUP and then LCD Contrast.
Rotate PARAM clockwise until the display reads Factory Defaults Push [VALUE].
Press the VALUE button. It will display Are you sure? [VALUE].
Press VALUE once again.
The interface will display Initializing… and then return to the Meter display.

However, Frequency sets the frequency of the underlying sample, the GrainDur sets the frequency of the heard sound (in the way I am using it). The Frequency changes the timbre of the pitch, not the pitch frequency (GrainDur does this as it is being used to define the duration of the wavetable and therefore the frequency - 1/duration - of the sound). It would seem then, that the 0.001 second value for GrainDur is a hard limit.

First of all, Kyma's TimeIndex works very precisely, of course…

In my case, the problem was exporting MIDI clips from Ableton Live. The clip originated from the µ-tonic drum synthesizer and was transferred to Ableton Live's clip view via drag and drop. A 1-bar clip can be saved with an End-of-Track (EOT) shorter than 1 bar after Export MIDI Clip…, which makes MidiFileWithTimeIndex jump when looped with OscillatorTimeIndex. If I drag the same pattern directly from µ-tonic to the Finder (bypassing Live), it loops perfectly in Kyma.

Setup & Observation

Source: µ-tonic sequencer → MIDI (Drag&Drop).

Path A (problem): µ-tonic → Ableton Live clip → Export MIDI Clip… → load in Kyma ⇒ wrong length (shorter than 1 bar).
Path B (correct): µ-tonic → directly to Finder → load in Kyma ⇒ perfect loop.
Two test files exported from Live measured shorter than 384 ticks (4×PPQ 96) for exactly 1 bar:
- DS Crazy Rattle (125) A.mid: 382 ticks (−2)
- DS Blizzard Control (135) A.mid: 368 ticks (−16) That small EOT shortfall is enough to cause an audible jump at the bar wrap in Kyma.

Kyma will automatically map the MPE messages if you turn on MPE in Configure MIDI under the DSP menu.

Are you using this example (from the Kyma Sound Library)? The idea is to record the full CaptureTime but to play back subsets of that full time (based on when you start or stop each loop).

To help anybody else who views this thread in the future:
Go to the Configure Midi option in the DSP page of the menu. Once in the Midi Configuration screen change the Continuum and MPE compatible status to On then change it to Off.
This fixed the midi issue for me.

Actually, after testing the MiniDSP box a bit more, it seems that (at least with Kyma) it doesn't boot at all if set to ADAT-clock slave. I'm using it as clock master now and see if this would work for me with my Metric halo setup. I actually have to unplug the ADAT cables to make it work after powering down the unit set up as ADAT-slave.

One possibility would be to create a CompiledSoundGrid. Then you could select which Sound to play by its grid number (and there could be one blank grid that you could select to stop the Sound).

I am seeing roughly this same issue on Windows 10 since roughly the same time. Every time Kyma starts, it detects an update available. If I say download it, a file gets downloaded to the Kyma7 folder, but that file "disappears" as soon as the download finishes. (and Kyma closes on a dialog that says "run the downloaded installer file in .../Kyma 7 Folder (i.e. run the installer file that just disappeared)". If I say, don't download it, I can use Kyma and the latest release notes are for 7.43f6 (7 October 2024).

Am I experiencing expected behavior?

Where can I find the latest version info here on the Kyma website to cross reference what I'm seeing in the app?

To clarify, I think I first experienced this same issue after updating to 7.43f5, and then successfully updated to f6, but am still experiencing the same weird behavior under 7.43f6. I don't know if f6 is still the current version.

Thanks, Tom. After looking at Mark's files we discovered that there was a hidden character in the file descriptor UTI that caused macOS not to recognize .wav files when they were dropped in the Kyma icon in the dock (but you could still open them from inside Kyma). This has been fixed and will be available in the next software update. Thanks Tom & Mark!

The Pacamara is much quieter for a couple of reasons: it never gets as hot as the Pacarana, and there's only a single large, low-speed, low-noise Noctua fan used for cooling the Pacamara. I have it on my desk next to my computer (whereas, I used to keep the Pacarana in another room).

The "van der Pol Oscillator Driven Mono Audio" in Prototypes (under Dynamical Systems) has an Input (the driver). Any signal can function as the driver (or you can change the waveform of the oscillator in the prototype to be something other than Sine).

I would put the Script to the right of the Replicator. If I understand you correctly, you want to read two arrays out of a single file, and assign each element of the array to its own Voice (in the Replicator).

I’d use a FunctionGenerator prototype. Then replace the Gaussian waveform with something like the exponrev.aif (in the “waveforms" folder). Then paste that sound in your the rate field of your DiskPlayer.

You could also try something like this ….
(1 ramp: 2 s) * (-1) + (1)
in the rate field of your DiskPlayer

If you are unfamiliar with the FunctionGenerator, I’d recommend a deep dive. It really helped me when I did. You can even create your own function shapes or edit the existing shapes in the sample editor window. So it gives you more flexibility in creating the shape you need to create the exact audio result your are looking for.

The problem is being caused by macOS erroneously asking Kyma to reopen windows that were open when you last quit Kyma. Holding down the Shift key while starting Kyma will bypass this problem caused by the macOS error.

TAU seems like a great approach! I would try pitch shifting alone first. If you search in the Sound Browser (by Sound name) for Sounds that have the word 'male' or 'formant', you might find some good starting points for live processing.

MOTU Track 16 forgets ADAT ports - Pacarana with Kyma 7

Fellow Kyma Users,

i bought a Track 16 to have the smalles ADAT interface for my Pacarana for traveling. In the Studio i use a TC Konnekt 48 since 2009 without any problems. But it is very heavy and big.

The Pacarana itself is connected via Ethernet to my Laptop.

Pacarana <- Firewire -> MOTU Track16 <- ADAT I/O-> Motu MK5 <-MacbookAir

When i startup the MOTU Track 16 (v1.03) connected via firewire to my Pacarana the ADAT ports are not available anymore in Kyma audio setup. :-(

I have to reboot with my Mac conncted via USB, switched them on in the MOTU Setup. Then disconnect and boot with MIC1(for Firewire mode) pressed and with a bit of luck Kyma sees the ADAT I/O in the configuration dialog. If the system is not used it somehow resets itself to disable the ADAT I/O.

I was wondering if there is a trick to hold another button to switch ADAT I/O on the Track 16 itself, maybe with some buttom combination or hold on boot? Or if it would be possible for SCC to switch ADAT on via the Kyma software on the Track 16 when i enable the "optical" external clock in the DSP window.

Any help is appreciated.

Quick update on this... It might've been a pacarana <-> macbookpro connection issue. I had pacarana and macbookpro connected to a switch that was connected to a media room switch at the other side of the building :). I connected pacarana directly to my macbookpro via ethernet cable now and it's been solid for the last 3-4 hours. I guess a clue could've been the painfully slow loading times of sounds using (pacarana <-> switch(s) <-> macbookpro) setup yesterday when the issues were happening...

@ssc would this explain the behavior I was seeing yesterday, would a spotty ethernet connection cause audio interface(s) to get lost?

Latest Kyma version no longer connects to focusrite liquid 56

Hello!

Hadn't updated Kyma for a while and after installing "7.42f3 (18 February 2024)". My Paca (serial 612) now has issues with my focusrite liquid 56 and cannot cleanly connect to it anymore.

Kyma itself is communicating fine via network cable to the Paca and the liquid 56 is connected directly via firewire which has been fine before I did this update.

After the latest update, even after various restarts of everything and turning the Paca on, after or before the firewire interface, I'm still getting the below issue.

When I choose the Liquid 56 in the DSP Status window. It will eventually connect to it after about 30 seconds and I will see light on the liquid 56 called "FW Active" turn on for a few seconds then turn off but once it has connected, the DSP usage in the DSP Status window for both 1 and 2 goes to max, there's a red "OUT OF REAL TIME" at the top and no sound can be produced from kyma.

It will also say the clock source is either internal or unknown when it should be external. If I try choose external (ADAT 2) then it will default instantly back to the silent device. Kyma does work fine with silent device though with DSP usage as expected, just doesn't work with the liquid 56 over firewire anymore.

The Paca is definitely seeing the liquid 56 properly as if I turn off the liquid 56, it dissapears from the selection on the actual Paca pretty much instantly and warns the firewire device is disconnected

Perhaps it's a firmware issue? Below are the dates for the 3 areas I can see and they do seem quite old :)

Compute: Aug 30 18:50:13 2021

Unless the Utralite is connected by FireWire to both your Mac and the Pacarana, the problem is unlikely to be due to the macOS update.

The MOTU may be stuck in USB mode.

We don't recommend trying to repair the power brick -- if something about the repair goes wrong, you would risk damaging your Paca!

There are 2 possible replacement power bricks that you could use, both manufactured by XP Power: AHM85PS12 and ALM120PS12.

Does anyone have thoughts on the first idea. FYI: Working together, the Max [stripnote] object filters out note off messages while the Max [flush] object keeps track of notes that are currently being sustained, so that they can be turned off at some later point in time.

Have you tried changing both the notenumber and the frequency in the expression? Something like this:

I’m leaving for MOXsonic tomorrow. I don’t want to risk messing with a Kyma download before my performance this weekend, I have poor rural Appalacian Internet … which may actually have cause this problem to begin with. I'll try it when I get back home. Meanwhile my work around of moving those two from my back up files to a different folder seems to be working okay. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
