in some ways i’m not a beginner, but in other ways i feel like a total beginner.

I’ve used Kyma (on and off) since 1997, and was pretty facile with it back then. I had to sell it during some extended unemployment, but got back into it, then ran into some issues. I was stupid, and didn’t want to throw money at the problem, but ultimately it turned out that there was an issue with my ‘high end’ audio interface, causing kyma to crash, and i just rarely used it for several years. in any case – enough rambling. just wanted to present some kind for context.

So, these sons du jour can be quite amazing. I’m curious – where are they coming from, exactly? maybe a silly question. Are these mostly user submissions?

but more importantly – i’d appreciate some guidance in how to research the functionality of a complex and useful sound here. For instance, the one i’m looking at today has so much stuff in it that is new to me. I never knew, for instance, that one could record pen movements outside of the timeline, but here we are in this sound, and it works great. the sound is in the sons du jour from 8/27 – Record Pen Gesture, Loop two copies of it. I suppose i’m spoiled – on the one hand, i don’t want to start at the very beginning, but analyzing this sound in its totality will take quite some time. On the other hand, that’s not exactly a bad thing….so the idea is to optimize the learning curve for stuff like this. Is there any info anywhere about these complex sounds and how they are constructed? Is the expectation just that one works through it prototype by prototype and figures it out to the degree that one can create one’s own examples, etc? That goal is obviously a good one – maybe the problem is that i’m just trying to get organized in my thoughts and learning here.

I’m so thrilled to be immersing myself in kyma again, but i’d like to maximize my learning speed, and i’m not sure at this point how to organize myself. I’d be willing to pay for ‘lessons’ but i’d be looking for someone who could help me in a very directed way like this. Help with THIS sound both in its specifity and general considerations in applying these techniques.

am i making any sense at all? I don’t encounter too many people who are like me in having a core understanding of how kyma works, but missing years of developments.

i don’t see too many general questions like this here. hope this isn’t annoying. Thank you!

I wonder if you’d enjoy Alan Jackson’s peer-learning sessions (aka Kyma Kata)?

They typically begin each session with “Prime Minister’s Question Time” (open question-and-answer session on how to do specific tasks in Kyma), followed by an exercise that each person works on independently for 30 minutes, after which they share and discuss their results.

You could try contacting Alan to find out if the Kata group might like to discuss that Sound at the next meeting(?)

          Hi,

That’s exactly the kind of thing we’d enjoy discussing and going through in the Kata. You’d be welcome to get in touch with me through the link SSC posted.

Alternatively you can fill in the kata sign up sheet
