I am still catching up with the expanded VCS functionaity. (X to 7) I do enjoy the nested groups of !controllers, but today, I want to merge them into one layout. Any hints?

This is easy, click on the little cog, choose 'Remove Embedding'

What's the difference between Remove Embedding and Remove All Embedding?
If your VCS has more than one embedded layout, Remove All Embedding will flatten all of them so you end up with a single VCS with no embedded layouts. (When you have just one embedded layout, then Remove & Remove All give the same result.)
